LeBron James is not afraid to get political. He made a name for himself in American basketball and quickly became an influential leader in the domain of social justice. Now he is continuing to do so by expressing supportive words about Colin Kaepernick.
Kapernick and his teammate Eric Read, reached a settlement with the National Football League over allegations that the sports association colluded to blackball the former San Francisco 49ers players, after they began protesting police brutality in the US by taking a knee during the national anthem.
James was asked for his thoughts on Kaepernick’s settlement with the NFL after playing in the All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“I think it’s important to stick up for what you believe in, you what I’m saying?” the Los Angeles Lakers power forward said in a press conference on Sunday. “I think with Kap, I stand with Kap, I kneel with Kap.”
The King also said that he felt no one truly cared to understand what societal ills that Kaepernick was trying to bring awareness to: police brutality, the criminal justice system, and social injustice.
“Nobody ever really wanted to understand where he was actually coming from,” he added.
“I think that anybody that would sacrifice their livelihood for the betterment of all of us, I can respect that and he’s done that. I mean, you got a guy who basically lost his job because he wanted to stand for something that was more than just him.”
