From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.First lady Dr Jill Biden appeared to be taking a swipe at her predecessor, Melania Trump, on Thursday with a unique choice of wardrobe as she spoke to reporters in Cornwall.
During a news conference, Dr Biden was asked by reporters about the meaning of the message on her jacket, which bore the word “Love” on the back.
“Well, I think that we’re bringing love from America,” Dr Biden responded. “This is a global conference and we’re trying to bring unity across the globe and I think that’s important right now, that people feel a sense of unity from all the countries and feel a sense of hope after this year of the pandemic.”
The emblazoned jacket appeared to be a callback to an early controversy sparked by Ms Trump during her White House tenure wherein the former first lady was criticized for wearing a jacket with the phrase, “I really don’t care. do u?” on the back during a visit to facilities housing migrant children in Texas.
Dr Biden reportedly had little to no contact with her predecessor, a major break from tradition, in the weeks and months leading up to her husband’s inauguration in January in part due to former President Donald Trump’s efforts at the time to block his election defeat and delay President Joe Biden’s White House transition.
The two did not take part in the traditional meeting and tour of the White House in January, a courtesy former first lady Michelle Obama had previously extended to Ms Trump in 2017 even despite their husbands’ very public and bitter feud.
Dr Biden met Thursday with Carrie Johnson, wife of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as the president and prime minister held a bilateral meeting ahead of the G7 summit in the days ahead.
