From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Dr Jill Biden is many things: a professor, a First Lady – and, as it turns out, a master of disguise.

On Thursday, April Fools’ Day, Dr Biden played a very effective prank on a gaggle of reporters and members of her own staff while they traveled aboard Air Force One.

As the plane flew from California to Washington, DC, a dark-haired flight attendant – wearing a black suit, face mask, and name tag that said “Jasmine” – handed out ice cream bars to the press and staff.

A few minutes later, First Lady “Jasmine” Biden – now without her black wig – returned to the cabin laughing.

“April Fools!” she exclaimed.

According to Emily Goodin, a Daily Mail reporter who was on the flight, the press had a good laugh and Dr Biden was “visibly pleased with her prank.”

Two members of the First Lady’s staff, Anthony Bernal and Michael LaRosa, said they were thoroughly fooled too.

And most importantly, Ms Goodin reported, “The ice cream bars – vanilla with a hard chocolate coating – were delicious.”

It was typical Biden humor, especially since the presidential couple famously love ice cream.

This was not Dr Biden’s first prank, or even her first prank on a plane. During her time as Second Lady, she popped out of an overhead compartment to surprise her staff on Air Force Two.

The First Lady has written about such jokes in her 2019 memoir, Where the Light Enters.

“I’ve always believed you’ve got to steal the joyful moments when you can,” she wrote.
