From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Jeb Bush has endorsed Texas Senator Ted Cruz for president, just one month after he stepped out of the race to the White House.

Mr Bush, who quit the candidacy after he suffered low voting results in earlier primaries, told Politico that Mr Cruz is a “consistent, principled Conservative”.

“For the sake of our party and country, we must overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity Donald Trump has brought into the political arena or we will certainly lose our chance to defeat the Democratic nominee, most likely Hillary Clinton, this fall," he wrote on a Facebook post.

“That is the only way we can reverse President Obama’s failed domestic and foreign policy agenda, and turn our country around.”

The endorsement is the latest sign that Republicans are uniting to stop Donald Trump, the billionaire real estate mogul who swept to victory this week in Arizona and Idaho.

Mr Cruz won a significant majority of 69 per cent in the Utah caucus but Mr Trump’s success will propel him far ahead in the lead to attain Republican delegates. A majority of Republican delegates is crucial for Mr Trump to become the nominee of the party.

Mr Bush, George W Bush’s younger brother, has sidestepped the remaining Republican John Kasich, who failed to pick up much support in any of the three Republican primaries on Tuesday.

Texan Senator Cruz said he was "honoured" to receive Mr Bush's endorsement, adding it to a line of endorsements from former governors including Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.

He called it “further evidence that Republicans are continuing to unite behind our campaign to nominate a proven conservative to defeat Hillary Clinton in November," as reported by USA Today.
