Kamala Harris calls out Donald Trump’s ‘lack of empathy’

Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Vice president Kamala Harris continued her media blitz on Tuesday by appearing on ABC’s The View , being interviewed at length on Howard Stern’s radio show, and guesting on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

The attention seems to be paying off. The Democrat has taken a three-point lead in the latest New York Times/ Siena College national poll — the first time she has pulled ahead of Donald Trump in that survey.

One of Harris’s recent appearances, on the Call Her Daddy podcast, led to a mini-scandal for Republican senator John Kennedy, who was pilloried online for a comment about the interview which also suggested tampons are luxuries.

Meanwhile, former president Trump reportedly sent Vladimir Putin Covid-19 test kits at the height of the pandemic, according to a new book by veteran Watergate journalist Bob Woodward.

Elsewhere on the political front, federal officials say they’ve foiled an ISIS-inspired Election Day threat.

And finally, Melania Trump marked the release of her memoir with a rare live interview on The Five on Fox News, shortly after her husband attacked the network on Truth Social.

The View: Harris asked about Trump’s claims about FEMA funds and DeSantis call

During her appearance on The View, Kamala Harris is asked about Donald Trump's baseless claims that FEMA funds are being diverted away from Republican parts of states hit by Hurricane Helene.

She responded: “This is so consistent about Donald Trump. He puts himself before the needs of others. I fear that he really lacks empathy on a very basic level, to care about the suffering of other people.”

On Florida Governor Ron DeSantis apparently not taking her call regarding the recovery from Helene and the impending impact of Hurricane Milton, Harris said she's talked with both Democrat and Republican governors. "So obviously, this is not an issue that is about partisanship or politics for certain leaders, but maybe is for others."

"And when I'm president I will continue to call him to see what he needs."

The View: Kamala Harris sits down with the hosts for live interview

Vice President Kamala Harris is being interviewed live on ABC’s The View.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg introducing her as “the next president of the United States” to loud applause from the crowd.

After recounting the story of President Joe Biden calling her to inform her of his decision to drop out of the 2024 race, Harris is asked whether she would have done something differently than Biden during this administration.

She responds: “There is not a thing that comes to mind in terms of — and I’ve been a part of most of the decisions that have had an impact.”

Harris then lists the accomplishments of the administration including lowering the cost of insulin and increasing spending on infrastructure.

Trump campaign claims Woodward’s stories ‘made-up'

Steven Cheung, communications director for the Trump campaign told The Independent:

“None of these made up stories by Bob Woodward are true and are the work of a truly demented and deranged man who suffers from a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Woodward is an angry, little man and is clearly upset because President Trump is successfully suing him because of the unauthorized publishing of recordings he made previously. President Trump gave him absolutely no access for this trash book that either belongs in the bargain bin of the fiction section of a discount bookstore or used as toilet tissue. Woodward is a total sleazebag who has lost it mentally, and he's slow, lethargic, incompetent and overall a boring person with no personality.”

Trump spoke with Putin at least seven times since leaving White House according to Bob Woodward

Donald Trump has reportedly spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin as many as seven times since leaving the White House.

A new book from journalist Bob Woodward includes extensive reporting about President Joe Biden’s “blunt, profanity-laced” behind-the-scenes responses to Putin’s war in Ukraine and Israel’s war in Gaza.

Woodward’s War — his fourth book since Trump won in 2016, excerpts of which were published by CNN — also contains previously unreported details about the former president’s relationship with the authoritarian leader, including a moment at Mar-a-Lago where he told a senior aide to leave the room so they could have a “private phone call.”

Alex Woodward reports.

Trump describes moment son Barron learned of rally shooting

Barron Trump learned about the assassination attempt on his father while playing tennis with his friends, the former president has said in a new interview.

Trump recalled his son’s reaction over the weekend while appearing on The Ingraham Angle on Fox News in an interview that aired last night.

“Barron was playing tennis with his friends, and somebody walked over and – ran over – and said, ‘Your father’s been shot. He’s been shot,’” Trump told the show.

“Barron – and Barron really likes his father a lot. And he came in ‘Mom, Mom, Mom, what happened?’ So, and then they saw me get up, and then they saw the fist pump.”

Michelle Del Rey has more.

Melania reveals stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports

The former first lady starts out promisingly by saying “our differences create a more fascinating, creative, and innovative world” in her new memoir before rebuking groups that “attempt to impose their ideologies on everyone, deepening the divisions in our society”, without so much as a flicker of irony.
