Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

If you’ve ever wanted to spend a night in Donald Trump’s childhood home, now is your chance.

Mr Trump’s five-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom estate in New York is available for bookings on Airbnb.

The property was auctioned off to an unnamed buyer in March, for $2.14m (£1.65m). The buyers have since leased it out to another party for $4,000 (£3,070) a month.

And now you, too, can spend a night there, for $725 (£558) a night.

“Not much has been changed since the Trumps lived here, the kitchen is original and the opulent furnishings represent the style and affluence in which the Trumps would have lived,” the Airbnb listing reads.

It continues: “This is a unique and special opportunity to stay in the home of a sitting president."

Photos accompanying the listing show the property has also been updated with various Trump memorabilia. There is an American flag outside, framed Trump quotes on the walls, and photos of Mr Trump scattered throughout the house. In the living room is a giant cutout of the President – “a great companion for watching Fox News late into the night”, the listing reads.

The Tudor-style home is said to sleep 17, and comes equipped with a full kitchen, internet and Cable TV. It is located in a wealthy neighbourhood of New York’s Queens borough, which the listing claims is “a wonderful haven from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan”.

“The Trump Childhood home ... is the perfect accommodation for a New York Vacation,” the listing reads.

Misha Haghani, the principal at the real estate company that auctioned off Mr Trump’s home, confirmed the authenticity of the listing to The Independent.

He said the long-term renters, not the owners, had made the decision to list the property on Airbnb.

He added that the owner had never intended to use the property for traditional purposes in the first place.

"We figured that whoever would buy it would buy it for some sort of investment purpose," he said. "When we dealt with this buyer, that was confirmed. We knew that they were not buying it in order to move in."

Reached by The Independent via Airbnb message, the lister declined to offer more details.

In the listing, however, the host writes that they live in one of the bedrooms, and would be happy to provide guests with advice on what to do in New York City. (They will also, charitably, help guests access the laundry room.)

The mystery host has only a few requirements for visitors, which include no smoking, no pets, and no parties.

Oh, and no politics.

“This listing has no relationship with the White House, the President, Donald Trump or the Trump organisation in any way,” the listing reads.
