From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Ted Cruz was fiercely criticised as he posted videos gushing over celebrities taking part in Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The senator from Texas took to Twitter after filming Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks performing at the Capitol Building ceremony.
Mr Cruz also posted a picture of Mr Biden being sworn in as the 46th president with a caption that read, “May God bless the United States of America.”
The Texas senator has faced calls for his resignation after his efforts to reject the electoral votes based on Donald Trump’s false claims of widespread election fraud.
Five people lost their lives in the subsequent 6 January Capitol riots when a pro-Trump mob attacked the building as lawmakers tried to certify the 2020 presidential election.
Mr Cruz was one of the most vocal challengers to Mr Biden’s victory and voted to object to Arizona and Pennsylvania’s results even after the mayhem unfolded.
He has said that he is not responsible for the disgraceful scenes and condemned the violence.
But that was not forgotten by Twitter users as they bashed the politician for his inauguration tweets.
“I am appalled that you thought it was even remotely appropriate for you to be there,” tweeted @BlueTX2020.
“Hours after a mob nearly took congressional hostages, you still supported their cause on the senate floor. You don’t get to fly the flag of the US today knowing that two weeks ago you flew the flag upside down,” wrote @stevetures.
“2 weeks ago this dude orchestrated a violent insurrection to stop this moment,” added @DavMicRot.
