From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Donald Trump’s former right-hand man Steve Bannon has already begun attacking his former colleagues less than a week after he was ousted from the White House.
The former White House chief strategist returned to Breitbart, the far-right website, where he had been executive chairman before joining the Trump campaign, on Friday.
Just two days later the website launched an attack on National Security Adviser HR McMaster as soft on Islamist extremism and terrorism.
Mr Bannon’s reign in the White House was marked by the discord and distrust between him and his senior colleagues – particularly with serving Lieutenant General McMaster, who is considered a moderate while Mr Bannon is a self-declared “economic nationalist”.
In an interview days before Mr Bannon left, Lt Gen McMaster was evasive about whether he was willing to work with him, saying he was “ready to work with anybody...to advance the President’s agenda and the advance the security, prosperity of the American people”.
Now Mr Bannon is firmly on the attack once again with a Breitbart article headlined: “HR McMaster Endorsed Book That Advocates Quran-Kissing Apology Ceremonies.”
It said Lt Gen McMaster supported a call for military personnel serving in the Middle East to avoid desecrating the Quran to improve relations with local Muslim communities – thus making them less likely to support radicalism.
