The viral tweet came in response to a post by Senator Joe Manchin in which he referenced his recent interview with The Washington Examiner writing: “Defund the police? Defund, my butt.”
“I'm a proud West Virginia Democrat. We are the party of working men and women,” the tweet reads. “We want to protect Americans' jobs & healthcare. We do not have some crazy socialist agenda, and we do not believe in defunding the police.”
AOC concisely summed up her displeasure of the post by posting a single photo of her staring deadpan at the back of Sen Manchin’s head during a State of the Union address in 2019.
In the photo, Rep Ocasio-Cortez, dressed in suffragette white, glares sharply at Sen Manchin as he smiles and claps in the row in front.
The progressive Democratic congresswoman received over 200,000 likes on the platform in just an hour following its publication on Thursday evening.
The tweet quickly drew calls of praise from AOC’s followers, with some calling her “iconic” and a “modern queen”.
“Bwahahaha that fact @AOC posted this gives me so much life,” one user said.
“That photo of @AOC in the background is all of us right now!!!,” another posted.
In 2019, the Democrat's stoic demeanour through much of the ceremony was a huge hit on social media, prompting many jokes and memes.
At the time AOC hit back at Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan for noting she was not “spirited” and “warm” during the president's speech.
“We’re flying without a pilot. And I‘m not here to comfort anyone about that fact,” Rep Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in response.
It now seems that the congresswoman has officially reclaimed the memes for herself, much to the delight of many on the platform.
The Daily Poster founder David Sirota tweeted: “Stating the obvious: @AOC is probably the world's greatest poster.”
“She is so good at this,” writer Max Fawcett tweeted. “When a picture is worth so much more than 1,000 words."
AOC’s frustrated reaction to Sen Manchin comes only days after the Democratic representative said that she might quit politics if Democrats continue to be “hostile” towards progressive causes.
In an interview with The New York Times she criticised Democrats for refusing to embrace progressive causes and signposted the emerging rift between the progressive and moderate ends for her increasing disillusion with the party.
“Externally, there’s been a ton of support, but internally, it’s been extremely hostile to anything that even smells progressive,” she said.
