A 23-year-old man has been shot dead by customs officers after refusing to stop at the Mexican border.

The US citizen opened fire when his pickup truck was blocked in at a vehicle inspection area near the San Ysidro entry point to California.

Video footage shows gunfire erupting as cars wait in line at around 7.30pm on Monday.

Border Patrol agents are heard yelling, “Get down, everybody get down!” as at least a dozen shots ring out.

San Diego police said the suspect was hit when officers returned fire.

Officers attempted to treat him at the scene but he did not survive his injuries.

His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

None of the seven officers involved were injured.

The police said in a statement: “The suspect began firing a gun out of his vehicle towards the officers, then exited his vehicle and continued firing at the officers.

“The officers returned fire, striking the suspect.”
