From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Donald Trump, despite still undergoing treatment for coronavirus, said on Tuesday he is “looking forward” to debating Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden next Thursday.

“FEELING GREAT,” the president wrote in another tweet after returning to the White House on Monday evening, though appearing short of breath as he posed for the cameras on the Truman Balcony after removing his mask despite a number of staff members being nearby.

The 15 October debate would fall within a typical Covid patient’s 14-day quarantine window, but rules matter little to Mr Trump. His general election foe on Monday said he would go on with the debate in Miami only if “scientists” assure him it can be done with no risk that the president would infect him or his team or workers there.

Mr Biden said Monday he is willing to debate Mr Trump  even though the president has coronavirus “if scientists say it’s safe.”

Speaking to reporters in Delaware before boarding a flight to campaign in Florida, the former vice president said he intends to “listen to the science," adding: “If scientists say that it’s safe, that distances are safe, then I think that’s fine.”

Mr Biden declined to say whether he would prefer a virtual second debate.

The president was first diagnosed, at least according to his medical team’s public contentions, late Thursday night. That would put the 9 p.m. debate just inside the 14-day quarantine window.

Some experts say Mr Trump could simply be kept more than six feet from Mr Biden or anyone else on stage.

Both candidates claimed victory after their first chaotic one-on-one session, during which the president interrupted his rival and moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News over 140 times.
