From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Donald Trump's daughter-in-law and adviser, Lara Trump, joined Republican congressional candidate Laura Loomer at a campaign stop in Florida on Wednesday.
Although not mentioned by name, photos of Ms Loomer with Ms Trump visiting volunteers in Boca Raton were tweeted by campaign staffer Courtney Parella.
"@LaraLeaTrump visited our hardworking volunteers in Boca Raton, FL," the tweet reads.
"These volunteers are knocking doors, making calls, and training new volunteers – all to spread the President’s record of success with their fellow Floridians."
Ms Loomer, who won the Republican primary in August, has been banned from using PayPal, Venmo, Uber, Lyft, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for holding controversial views and conspiracy theories that run afoul of the Silicon Valley tech giants' policies.
In 2017, she labelled herself a "proud Islamophobe" and asked, "how many more people need to die before everyone agrees that Islam is cancer & we should never let another Muslim into the civilized world?"
A former reporter/personality for Project Veritas and InfoWars, Ms Loomer has claimed the 2018 high school shooting in Parkland was a "false flag" hoax, celebrated the death of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, and said someone needs to create a non-Islamic Uber or Lyft because she never wants "to support another Islamic immigrant driver".
A Trump campaign spokesperson said that Ms Trump was in Florida to campaign for the president and that Ms Loomer happened to be at one of several campaign stops that day, according to USA Today.
Several Republicans have supported Ms Loomer, including Florida's Matt Gaetz, Arizona's Paul Gosar, and Mr Trump himself, with press secretary Kayleigh McEnany saying last week the president hadn’t done a “deep dive” into her views before congratulating her primary victory.
"Great going Laura. You have a great chance against a Pelosi puppet!," Mr Trump said soon after her primary win.
Ms Loomer is going up against Democrat Lois Frankel in Florida's 21st seat, but despite being a candidate of a major political party Twitter said it would not reverse her ban.
"The account owner you referenced was permanently suspended for repeated violations of the Twitter Rules, and we do not plan to reverse that enforcement action," Twitter said in a statement shared with media.
