From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. As Donald Trump spoke at his rally in Hickory, North Carolina, one of two scissor lifts supporting a large American flag collapsed.

No one was injured when the lift tipped over, apparently the victim of a strong gust of wind.

The large flag was displayed behind the crowd and the press area’s desks.

Footage posted on Twitter shows the lift leaning against a building adjoining the site of the rally and the flag flapping wildly in high winds.

A group of workers can be seen rushing over to lower the other lift in case it too blows over.

The flag was removed and the area cordoned off with caution tape. The president did not appear to notice and can be heard continuing his speech.

Twitter users were quick to pounce on the symbolism, some noting that conversely, earlier in the day, two bald eagles had appeared in the sky above a Joe Biden rally.

Other comments included noting that poor planning was emblematic of the administration’s record.

A third scissor lift had lights on it and had to be lowered.

In 2016 a stage collapsed live on TV at a Trump event at his own hotel in Washington, DC.  The event had ended and no one was injured.

The North Carolina rally is jut one of five Trump campaign events today, with just two days to go before the polls close.

Visits to Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida packed the president’s schedule.

The RealClear Politics polling average has Joe Biden leading by 7.2 percentage points nationally.

In North Carolina the polling average has the former vice president ahead by just 0.3 per cent.
