From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. A university dean has resigned after calling president-elect Joe Biden’s supporters “ignorant, anti-American and anti-Christian.”

Dr Paul Ewell quit as the dean of Virginia Wesleyan University days after making the incendiary posts on Facebook.

Mr Ewell’s comments even caught the attention of Donald Trump who retweeted a story on them with the caption “Progress!”

The academic’s post, which was made on a private page but then leaked, also told Mr Biden’s supporters to “unfriend” him and accused them of corrupting the election and “our youth..our country.”

Dr Ewell has also left his job as a professor of management, business and economics the school confirmed.

“Last week, Dr Paul Ewell resigned as Dean of Virginia Wesleyan University Global Campus," the university said in a ststement.

"Today, the University accepted his resignation as Professor of Management, Business and Economics.”

Dr Ewell later told the university’s student newspaper that he had been upset and regretted his comments.

“I have friends and family who are Democrats, and I love them dearly,” he said according to the Marlin Chronicle

"I have apologized on both accounts profusely. I set a poor example in that post of what a Christian should be.

"I know that God has forgiven me and already died for my sins. I hope others will forgive me as well.

"We all need to be a little less quick to anger and a little more willing to forgive, and that certainly applies to me. I am a Christian work-in-progress for sure."
