From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The election website of the state of Pennsylvania was struggling to cope on Thursday night as the number of visitors to the site increased rapidly amid the close race between President Donald Trump and his Democrat rival Joe Biden.

With a message saying that “the dashboard is loading slowly,” due to “increased traffic”, visitors to the Pennsylvania department of state website were advised to “be patient” and resist the urge to refresh the browser too many times.

Pennsylvania, one of a few key swing states still counting votes as of early Friday morning, could ultimately decide the fate of the election with its 20 electoral college votes.

Throughout the campaign, the state has been seen as a crucial battleground for both Mr Trump and Mr Biden, with both making many visits in recent months.

The state would comfortably take Mr Biden over the 270-vote threshold needed to win the presidency, while Mr Trump needs to take the state as well as see other results flip his way.

According to CNN, Mr Trump was leading the Keystone State with a lead of only about 26,000 votes with more than 90 per cent of the count complete, down from a lead of more than half a million.

With Mr Biden closing in, the Trump campaign has called for a halt to vote-counting in Pennsylvania and is steadfastly challenging the state’s Supreme Court ruling that ballots postmarked on or before election day can be received by Friday and still be counted. Mr Biden's campaign, meanwhile, says they believe they will win the state by a "sizeable" margin by the time all the votes are tallied.
