Your support makes all the difference.George Floyd’s sister has filmed a campaign advert for Joe Biden, released on what would have been his 47th birthday and describing the Democrat candidate as “the change we need”.
Bridgett Floyd, whose brother was killed in Minneapolis by a white police officer on May 25, said her family was touched by Biden’s getting in contact.
Biden met privately with the Floyd family in Houston in June, as mass protests calling for racial equality and police reform grew. It was his first time away from his Delaware home in three months, and while in Houston he recorded an address which was delivered at Floyd’s funeral.
“Joe Biden reached out to the family to actually meet. He was there to listen. He was very sincere,” she said.
“Biden is the change we need.”
She then urged all Americans to make sure they vote in the election, telling viewers: “Your vote does matter. That one vote does make a difference.”
Bridgett has become one of the most high-profile figures in the Floyd family, regularly appearing on news networks to discuss the latest developments in her brother’s case.
The four officers involved - Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Keung and Tou Thao - are due to face trial in March.
Last month Bridgett announced the creation of the George Floyd Memorial Foundation, which was set up to use work on police reform, rehabilitating ex-offenders and training young people.
Bridgett announced that their first donation was going to the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, which offers shelter and resources for those experiencing homelessness.
On Wednesday Bridgett appeared on Good Morning America and reiterated her appeal for Americans to turn out for the election.
"My brother's death sparked a global outcry for change," she said. "And that's why I'm encouraging everyone to vote, on this day, George's 47th birthday.
“Whoever you want to vote for, whoever you're going to bubble in, whoever you're going to move to the side - get it all laid out and go take action.”
