Cindy McCain has revealed that Donald Trump’s insults towards veterans was the “final straw” in her support for the president.

John McCain’s widow said she felt compelled to back Joe Biden’s White House campaign after an Atlantic article reported Mr Trump had called veterans “losers and suckers”.

Ms McCain told 60 Minutes  on CBS she could no longer tolerate Mr Trump’s disrespect for the military.

“For me, the final straw was the, you know, ‘They’re losers and suckers,’” said Ms McCain.

"You know, I’m the mother of two veterans and a wife of a veteran, and my father was a veteran. They were not losers and suckers by any chance.

“It angered me a great deal. It angered me. And so I thought, you know, I can either sit here and be angry or I can do something.”

Ms McCain endorsed Mr Biden for president in September, a month after she spoke in a video at the Democratic National Convention about her late husband’s friendship with the former vice president.
