From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has described drivers who supported Donald Trump and blocked a road as “a pileup of chumps”.

She wrote on Twitter on Sunday as a pro-Trump caravan blocked traffic on New York City's Whitestone Bridge, which connects the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx, that those involved were “chumps”.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez, whose district includes parts of both boroughs, said she “took the Throggs Neck [bridge]” because she had “heard there was a pileup of chumps on the Whitestone [bridge]”.

She responded to another Twitter user who shared a video from Whitestone Bridge and wrote: "I hope AOC isn't using the Whitestone Bridge today there is a lot of traffic!"

The user, whose name appeared as Midnight Rider Chump for Trump!, appeared to be a pro-Trump account.

The Republican president’s supporters, whose caravans have made national headlines in recent days, also drove over New York’s Mario Cuomo Bridge on Sunday afternoon, causing disruption to traffic.

The caravan had been due to move though downtown Manhattan on Sunday, AM New York reported, but was not seen in the downtown area.

At least 11 people involved in counter-protests, who planned to meet the pro-Trump drivers in Manhattan, were meanwhile arrested for for various offences after they met riot police, ABC New York reported.

According to AM New York, offences included “failing to follow lawful orders,” disorderly conduct and the assault of an officer.

It was not clear whether anyone involved in the pro-Trump caravan was arrested on Sunday.

New York, which leans Democrat, is not considered a competitive state in Tuesday’s election, which takes place in less than 48 hours.

Mr Trump, who campaigned in must-win states this weekend, described his supporters whose vehicles ambushed a Joe Biden campaign bus in Texas last week as “very good people”.

The FBI is investigating the Texas incident.
