From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Video has captured a driver's attempt to save a schoolboy frantically running away from a turkey in hot pursuit.
The child, weighed down by a backpack, can be seen in the footage running up a bicycle lane at the side of a road, while the bird - just feet behind - appears to be gaining.
Suddenly, an SUV veers between the boy and the turkey, forcing it to veer away and temporarily halt the chase.
The footage was captured by a fellow driver, Evan Skaletski, in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin.
Vanessa Miramontes, the woman who intercepted the animal, told local news channel Action News 2 she saw the child’s eyes “completely bugged out” during the pursuit.
“You could sense the poor kid’s fear,” she said, adding she “instinctively” turned in front of the turkey.
But after the bird stared her down “for what felt like a year”, it took off again and caught back up with the boy, who was still running, within seconds.
Eventually, another vehicle stopped and took the child home, Ms Miramontes said.
