Jewellery encrusted with diamonds, sapphires and emeralds has been stolen from two apartments in Trump Tower.

Residents reported the theft of the high-value jewellery from two apartments inside the building that is also home to the president when he is in New York City

Police investigations into the theft of the $353,000 (£283,600) worth of jewellery are ongoing.

One of the victims was a 67-year-old woman living on the 42nd floor of the Manhattan skyscraper. She had a total of five items worth $236,000 (£189,600) stolen while she was away from 21 June to 9 September.

These included a Harry Winston diamond bracelet; a ring, necklace and bracelet made of diamonds and sapphires; and a pair of diamond-and-emerald earrings.

The second victim, a 33-year-old woman, said her $117,000 (£93,980) Graff diamond bracelet was taken from her 59th-floor apartment after she went away on holiday on 3 September.

She reported the theft on 11 September.

A police spokesman told The New York Times a suspect has not yet been identified and investigations were ongoing.

Reports of the thefts came as Mr Trump was expected to return to the Fifth Avenue skyscraper, where he has a penthouse triplex.

The tower is also home to several of the Trump Organisation’s offices.

Mr Trump is due to go to attend the United Nations General Assembly where world leaders will be discussing climate change, Iran and trade wars across five days of meetings this week.

As a result of the president’s impending arrival, security has been on high-alert since before the thefts were reported.

Police have closed a number of streets in the vicinity, including sections of 55th and 56th Streets.

Pavements will remain open, but those walking by may have to be screened by the Secret Service, police said.
