At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. A toddler was among five people killed yesterday when a gunman opened fire in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert, Arizona.

The shootings occurred in a residential area of single-family homes, according to the Arizona Republic. Authorities say the man was armed with several firearms, and officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun. The gunman's identity and motives aren't immediately known.

A school near the scene of the shooting was locked down and students weren't allowed to come in or out. Gilbert police did not immediately respond to questions about the incident.
