From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Dean Smith is a dedicated man. He recently revealed to his now fiancé that he had been proposing to her every day for 365 days in the form of a video documenting his quest for her hand in marriage, and in the process, managed to make a lot of internet viewers “cry like a baby”.
Smith’s fiancé Jennifer was delivered the video on her birthday in Aruba, and it is currently one of the internet’s best examples that romance is alive and well in the real world.
The video starts with Smith explaining his plan: “Happy birthday Jennifer. By now you’ve probably realised that your birthday surprise is in the form of this video. But what you don’t know is that I’ve been planning this birthday surprise for over a year now.”
He duly films himself holding up a whiteboard with a proposal and the date on it for 365 days, carrying messages such as “Marry me, Jen?” “Will you make me the happiest man in the world?” “Will you be my wife, Jen?” over the course of the year.
But while the video has garnered countless comments from people that it is “so sweet” and “cute” and that it will make viewers “cry like a baby,” it has left many cold. Many claim to have felt unmoved and bored, while others felt compelled to simply comment on how much Smith is seen brushing his teeth in the video.
Here are a few comments from those who were bowled over, those who were left cold, and those who were simply concerned about other things:
