Your support makes all the difference.One student was killed and another wounded after gunshots rang out at a student housing complex near Texas Southern University.
The shooting was reported to police at 11:30am UTC and campus was on lockdown for more than three hours while police secured the area. The Houston Chronicle reports that two of three possible suspects were detained by Houston police.
Texas Southern President John Rudley told reporters that the student killed was a freshman at the university.
“He was a beautiful young man trying to get his life together. I wish he was still here.”
The Texas Tribune reports that Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation in June that allows handguns inside dorms and campus buildings. At that time, he called the legislation a "genius" nod to the Founding Fathers.
College officials announced that classes would be cancelled for the remainder of the day. The historically black university has 9,700 students enrolled in classes.
Earlier in the day, a shooting took place on campus at Northern Arizona University where one student was killed and three others were left injured.
