The shooting, which reportedly occurred just before 8 am local time in the school cafeteria, prompted an evacuation of students. The Associated Press reported that no injuries had been confirmed, but specific details were unclear. Local reports indicated that a 15-year-old girl had been shot at the high school in Italy, Texas, and that her condition was unknown after she had been taken to a hospital. A 16-year-old boy was said to have been the shooter, but it was not clear if he knew his victim.
The shooter has been taken into police custody.
Parents were first notified about the shooting through a text message from the school district's superintendent, Lee Joffre, according to a screenshot of the mass text shown to local reporters.
"We have had an active shooter incident at the high school campus this morning," Mr Joffre wrote in the statement. "The shooter is in custody and law enforcement has control of the scene. There has been one victim that has been transported to the hospital. All junior high and high studetns are safe and will be transported by bus to Stafford Elementary for dismissal after police approval."
Italy is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, with a population of 1,863, according to the 2010 census.
