From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As storms in Texas dumped historic rainfall over the Memorial Day weekend, the Houston Rockets took one step back from the brink on Tuesday and beat the Golden State Warriors at home on Monday.

But post-game celebrations were short-lived in Houston, as hundreds of fans were trapped at the Toyota Centre for more than 11 hours due to dangerous conditions outside.

In total, 11 people have been killed in Texas and Oklahoma and several people are still missing. More than 1,000 homes have been destroyed in Texas, displacing thousands of people, according to the Associated Press.

Dwight Howard, the Rockets centre, was among those trapped in the Toyota Centre on Monday night and the player came out from the locker room to speak with fans who stayed in the stands.

After Monday's win, the Rockets still are down three games to one in the NBA's Western Conference Finals. No team has ever come back from a 3-0 hole in the best-of-seven series. Game 5 is on Wednesday.
