Tenant moves into $500,000-a-month apartment in New York

A mystery New York tenant is paying half a million dollars a month to rent a flat “fit for royalty”.

The top floor of the five-star Pierre Hotel, in Manhattan, comes with views of Central Park, a butler and complementary chauffeur-driven Jaguar service.

The penthouse’s six bedrooms are not sufficient for the tenant, the Wall Street Journal reported, who has also reserved a separate $150,000-a-month (£95,000) suite for guests.

Jonathan Miller, the president of appraisal firm Miller Samuel, told the newspaper the $500,000 (£320,000) monthly rental sets a record for New York residential leasing.

A listing described the 39th floor penthouse as perfect for the “most discerning clientele” and “truly fit for a CEO, royalty or head of state”.

“Looking across Fifth Avenue to incomparable and panoramic views of Central Park and the city, this one-of-a-kind six bedroom home provides the ultimate in gracious living,” it said.

“Spacious and serene, the living, dining and sitting rooms blend the elegance of couture fabrics, custom furnishings and Murano glass chandeliers. The residence is completed by spa-like en-suite marble bathrooms, fully equipped pantry, curated artwork and integrated technology. “

Tenants can also make use of the hotel’s concierge, maid service and pet pampering.

Considering the 39th floor of the Pierre Hotel would usually be booked for $30,000 a night, the monthly rental could be considered a relative bargain.

Therese Bateman, a listing agent, told the Wall Street Journal the flat had been leased until the end of December.

She would not give any details about the tenant but said there had been significant interest from Europe, the Middle East and Commonwealth nations.
