Destiny Garcia allegedly told a family member that she fatally shot Rosie Sanchez, 38, and her boyfriend Anderson Nunez, 40, the New York Daily News reports.
Jason Valentin, Garcia's cousin, told reporters that Garcia confessed to the crime and he had no choice but to turn her in.
“It was hard for me, but at the end of the day, whether family or not, a crime was committed,” he said. “Whoever is responsible, even if it’s her, they have to pay for what they did.“
Garcia originally told officials that her mother refused to protect her from Nunez, who sexually abused. On Monday, she changed her story by telling investigators that her mother was actually the abuser.
“She said basically it was the mother that actually was abusive to her, physically abusive to her, in the past,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters.
“We don’t believe this was at all an act of self-defense. She went and got a gun. That’s not consistent with someone [acting] in self-defense.”
The teen kept the murders a secret and told investigators that she went out partying in Times Square for New Years Eve three days later, the Daily News reports.
Garcia remains in custody while police seek an accomplice to the murders.
