From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Johnny Knoxville once landed on his head and almost died after he was struck by a bull, attacked by a yak and almost blown up on a rocket.
The stunt man knows how to absorb a beating -- and the āJackassā star had the shattered bones and concussions to prove it. But as for dishing out some punishment? The 52-year-old figured it was time to take the fight from the bull ring to the wrestling ring against Sami Zayn.
āFor WrestleMania, itās not going to be too safe for Sami Zayn, Iāll tell you that right now,ā Knoxville said. āHeās going to be wishing he got run over by a bull.ā
Knoxville is the latest celebrity to lace up the boots for a feature match at WrestleMania, joining the likes of former winners Bad Bunny and Mr. T. Also on the card is YouTuber Logan Paul in a tag-team bout and retired NFL punter Pat McAfee has a match against WWE CEO Vince McMahon's hand-picked protƩgƩ Austin Theory.
The WrestleMania card at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, runs Saturday and Sunday. Charlotte Flair defends her Smackdown womenās championship against Ronda Rousey and āStone Coldā Steve Austin returns to confront Kevin Owens in Saturdayās main attractions. WWE champion Brock Lesnar takes on Universal Champion Roman Reigns in a unification bout in Sundayās main event. Both nights are streamed on Peacock.
The Undertaker -- who once won 21 straight matches at WrestleMania -- was set Friday night to get inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. The only wrestlers at WrestleMania to beat Undertaker are Lesnar and Reigns.
āI see it going either way,ā Undertaker said. āIf you press me, Iām going to say Roman wins. That might be an upset but thatās kind of what Iām thinking.ā
WrestleMania returns to AT&T Stadium for the first time since Dwayne āThe Rockā fired a flamethrower in front of nearly 94,000 fans in 2016.
Knoxville fights Zayn in an āAnything Goesā match on Sunday. In other words, donāt be surprised to see Knoxville bring some of his āJackassā cronies along for the ride to help him pull off a win against the pesky Zayn. Knoxville appeared on WWE TV earlier this year to promote his movie āJackass Forever.ā Zayn eliminated Knoxville from the over-the-top-rope Royal Rumble match in January to kickstart the full-fledged feud.
āIt took four men ā four men! ā to get me out of the ring,ā Knoxville said.
The men have tried to upstage each other as part of the storyline for the last three months: Zayn crashed the āJackassā red carpet premiere; Knoxville cost Zayn a match and the Intercontinental belt.
āItās just talking so much smack all the time,ā Knoxville said in an recent interview with The Associated Press before āSmackdown." āItās one of the only things Iām decent at. So to be able to use that negligible skill for this is wonderful.ā
Knoxville insisted heās been seriously training for his professional wrestling singles debut. He grew up watching wrestling, but it didnāt necessarily steer him toward the path of starring in his own MTV reality show.
āThat was more of the influence of my father and Evel Knievel and cartoons,ā he said. āBut thereās a common thread between the WWE and Jackass.ā
The connective thread included a night at a hotel before the Royal Rumble when Knoxville spotted Lesnar -- the former UFC heavyweight champion -- strolling the restaurant. Knoxville egged on Lesnar to throw pint-sized āJackassā star Wee Man through a table.
Sure enough, the hulking Lesnar picked up Wee Man and slammed him through the dinner table.
Knoxville said heād like to stick around past WrestleMania and continue his relationship with the company. He also hasnāt completely ruled out another āJackassā film after ā Jackass Forever ā grossed roughly $80 million in a pandemic.
āThe worldās in a pretty crazy place. We were hoping people would go to the theaters because they need a laugh right now, but we didnāt know,ā he said. āThat they turned out and liked what we did, it means the world to us.
āWe could do another one. But who knows?ā
