At least four people were shot in broad daylight in North Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon — two were hit in the head.

The shooting occurred at about 3.30pm near Temple University's main campus, at the intersection between 11th and Thompson Streets.

Police sources have told 6ABC that a 19-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man sustained gunshots wounds to the head. The man is said to be in critical condition, the condition of the teenage girl is unknown.

Two other men, aged 23 and 25 were also injured and are said to be in a stable condition. All four are being treated at a local hospital.

A suspect has been detained but a motive is so far unknown.

There is a large police presence in the area and the intersection is blocked off.

Bullet holes can be seen on both the front and back of a parked vehicle, and residents report hearing rapid gunfire, with some saying they heard up to 20 shots.

A nearby elementary school was dismissing pupils for the day when the incident occurred.
