News Channel 5 in Nashville reported the incident had happened after another vehicle allegedly jumped a red light and ran into the back of the family’s car.

Ray and her husband – also a paramedic - rushed to the scene where her 72-year-old grandmother had suffered serious enough injuries to see her sent to hospital for treatment. Ray said she had to reassure her grandmother that the crash had not ruined her day.

The bride’s mother snapped a photograph of Ray holding up her wedding dress as she walked away from the scene, with a police car and a fire engine sat on the motorway in the background. The picture has since received much attention, with well-wishers calling Ray a hero.

“I love this photo because it shows her true character,” mother Marcy Martin told the news channel.

“I just have to laugh because I know the face I’m giving my mom is the ‘Really, mom? Right now you’re taking a picture?’,” Ray said of the photograph.

“I’m sure we were a sight on the side of the road for people who were driving by.”
