A woman has drowned while taking part in a paddleboard yoga class, police have said.
Lisa Margaritis plunged into the water while attending the session at Hashamomuck Pond in the town of Southold, New York.
Witnesses said the 48-year-old’s paddleboard had become trapped under a bridge piling as she attempted to help another woman caught in a strong current.
When she fell off the stuck board, she was unable to free herself because she was tethered to it, Martin Flatley, of Southold Police, said in a statement.
A jogger passing by jumped in and was able to free Ms Margaritis and bring her to land, he added.
A hospital paramedic arrived and carried out CPR, while police and fire crews also attended the scene.
But Ms Margaritis was pronounced dead a short time later at Long Island hospital, the statement said.
