Surveillance video has captured the moment of the explosion in an attempted terrorist attack at Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

Commuters scrambled to evacuate the major transit hub just blocks from Times Square after a man detonated a small explosive device in the city's subway system.

Police said a suspect was in custody with non-life threatening injuries.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has told CNN that the suspect in the attack was “disgruntled” and “went to the internet to try and get information about how to make a home-made bomb”.

The 27-year-old man believed to have set off a pipe bomb in the New York City subway came to the US from Bangladesh seven years ago with a type of preferential visa for people with relatives who are US citizens or permanent residents, according to the Associated Press, citing sources.
