From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Donald Trump just received his first sneaker endorsement and no one is happy to hear that New Balance is supporting an unpredictable bigot. The vice-president of the sports apparel company told a Wall Street Journal reporter that the company felt that President Barack Obama has turned a deaf ear to them.

"The Obama admin turned a deaf ear to us [and] frankly [with] Pres-Elect Trump we feel things are going to move in the right direction," the VP told Sara Germano. In the past, both Mr Trump and New Balance opposed Trans-Pacific partnership but now, after the comments circulated online, folks immediately began trashing their shoes and New Balance merchandise.

Since they’ve seen their items land in numerous trash bins, New Balance issued a new statement reminding the public that it has supported other candidates in the past, based on their free trade policies.

"As the only major company that still makes athletic shoes in the United States, New Balance has a unique perspective on trade and trade policy in that we want to make more shoes in the United States, not less," the statement read. "New Balance publicly supported the trade positions of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump prior to election day that focused on American manufacturing job creation and we continue to support them today."
