Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Neil Young has endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in a long statement on his website.
Calling the Vermont senator "the real deal", Young's post details why he is endorsing Sanders, saying "I support Bernie because I listen to what he says,"
"Every point he makes is what I believe in. Every one. In 2016, if Bernie had run instead of Hillary Clinton, I think we would not have the incompetent mess we have now."
The 74-year-old also criticised the Democratic party themselves, claiming they are not working in the best interests of the voters.
"I think the DNC is more interested in themselves and the power of their party than anything else."
"Bernie scares the hell out of the DNC. That's why they're acting this way right now. They are scared because their own power is challenged. If Bernie wins they might lose it."
Later in the post while praising Sanders, Young called on support for students and the working class.
"We already have socialism in the USA bailing out Wall Street and the super rich. How about the working class and the students who want a real future without debt?", said Young.
"What about them?"
The singer criticised Donald Trump in another blog post on his website last month, calling the president "a disgrace to my country."
In that post, Young praised Sanders, but didn't go as far as endorsing him for president.
"One of your opponents has the answers I like. He is aiming at preserving our children's future directly. He is not popular with the Democratic establishment because, unlike all the other candidates, he is not pandering to the industries accelerating Earth's Climate Crisis, the end of the world as we know it." wrote Young.
"He is truly fighting for the USA. His initials are BS. Not his policies."
Sanders is currently second in the race to be the Democratic nominee for president with 574 delegates, while Joe Biden is leading with 670.
Tonight, Sanders and Biden face off in six states, in what are the first primaries since Super Tuesday.
