Your support makes all the difference.Shawn Bradley, the former NBA basketball player, was paralysed two months ago in an accident he suffered while riding his bike, his former team announced on Wednesday.
According to a statement released by the Dallas Mavericks, Mr Bradley was biking on 20 January just a block from his home in St. George, Utah, when a car hit him from behind. The accident caused a traumatic spine injury and left him paralysed.
He has spent the last eight weeks in the hospital, the Mavericks said, first undergoing neck fusion surgery and rehabilitating since then.
“With his wife Carrie at his side around the clock, and supported by an amazing team of rehabilitation specialists and family, Bradley is in good spirits,” the Mavericks said. “He plans to use his accident as a platform to bring greater public awareness to the importance of bicycle safety.”
Mr Bradley played as a centre for the Mavericks from 1997 to 2005, and before that for the New Jersey Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Mavericks’ statement indicated that Mr Bradley’s injuries were quite serious, adding that his religious beliefs as a Mormon were helping him get through this time.

“His very strong sense of faith is being tested as he participates in gruelling physical therapy and learns how to cope with the challenges of paraplegia,” the statement said. “Doctors have advised him that his road to recovery will be both long and arduous, perhaps an even more difficult physical challenge than playing professional basketball.”
Members of the Mavericks organisation offered their sympathy and support.
“We are saddened to hear of Shawn’s accident,” said Mark Cuban, owner of the Mavericks. “We wish him nothing but the best in his recovery. He will always be a part of our Mavs family.”
Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks’ general manager, made a similar statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family,” Mr Nelson said. “He has always exhibited unwavering grit and determination and we are thinking of him at this difficult time.”
The Mavericks said Mr Bradley does not plan on issuing any further updates for the time being, and is focusing entirely on his recovery.
