Police believe the man, who has yet to be formally identified, climbed onto the roof as the train pulled into Balaclava station in Melbourne, Australia.
Witnesses told the Age said the man, who is thought to be in his mid-20s, was a passenger on the train and removed his clothes before climbing onto the roof. According to ABC News he then fell on power lines and began “convulsing and shaking” and was on fire. The power had to be cut before authorities could reach his body.
"It appears a passenger on the train has climbed onto the roof as it approached the platform and was injured," a spokesperson for Victoria Police said. Police have yet to determine the official cause of his death but said "the possibility of misadventure may form part of the investigation".
Train surfing is where people hang onto or run alongside moving trains or trams. The practice is considered incredibly dangerous.
