Police have been left baffled after a man was found lying naked in the middle of a road with his penis severed and absolutely no idea what had happened.

The 62-year-old man was found lying in a pool of his own blood at around 4.20am on Tuesday, in the middle of a road near Clarkston in Washington State. He has not yet been formally identified.

Officers said that, when questioned, the man had no recollection of what he had been doing the previous evening, or what had caused his horrific wounds.

After they found the badly injured man, who was still conscious at the time, police followed a trail of blood several hundred yards to a grassy bank, where they discovered the man’s missing penis, his boxer shorts and a serrated knife.

The man was then taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries. It is not known if surgeons were able to reattach the penis.
