A woman murdered her daughter by forcing a crucifix down her throat because she believed she was possessed by the devil, police say.

Juanita Gomez, 50, allegedly pushed the crucifix down her throat "until blood came out of her daughter's mouth," court documents claim.

Police in Oklahoma City found Geneva Gomez, 33, lying in her mother's home on Saturday with a large crucifix on her chest and severe trauma to her head and face, News9 reports, and her body was arranged in the shape of a cross.

Gomez reportedly told investigators she believed her daughter was possessed by the devil.

She also had bruises on her arms and swollen hands, which she told investigators were from her daughter "fighting her attempts to rid Satan" from her body.

She has been charged with first-degree murder.

One neighbour told local station KFOR: “She was a very quiet person. She didn’t really talk to other people. She was just in her own little world."
