From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

It turns out that there’s at least one thing the Trump and Clinton clans can agree on.

First Lady Melania Trump has thanked Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, for a series of tweets denouncing an article that criticised the clothing choices of Donald Trump’s 11-year-old son Barron.

Having grown up in the White House under the harsh glare of media attention, Chelsea Clinton urged more consideration.

“It's high time the media & everyone leave Barron Trump alone & let him have the private childhood he deserves,” Chelsea Clinton wrote on Twitter in response to a Daily Caller article entitled “It’s High Time Barron Trump Starts Dressing Like He’s In the White House”.

The reporter wrote in the article that it was time the president's son “starts dressing the part” and ditches his T-shirts and shorts in favor of a blazer, shirt and tie with combed hair when in public.

A follow-up tweet, in which Chelsea Clinton wrote “No child should be talked about in the below manner-in real life or online”, drew online applause from the First Lady.

“Thank you @ChelseaClinton - so important to support all of our children in being themselves!” Ms Trump wrote.

Ms Trump tagged the tweet #StopChildhoodBullying, an allusion to her personal cause of combating cyberbullying - a focus that has raised some eyebrows given her husband's propensity for belittling opponents on Twitter, often with derisive language.
