Sheriffs for Harford County said they were on the scene at the Emmorton Business Park in Edgewood - about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Baltimore - with two other people critically injured.
Harford County sheriff's office said federal officials had detained a suspected gunman at about 7.30pm local time. Maryland State Police had identified 37-year-old Radee Labeeb Prince as the alleged shooter.
Mr Gahler also said the suspect had fled the scene in a black 2008 GMC Acadia with Delaware license plates and was to be "considered armed and dangerous," the Baltimore Sun newspaper reported.
All five victims are believed to be employees of Advanced Granite Solutions, where the shooting happened, the sheriff said.
According to police, Mr Prince is an employee of the company though that was unclear at first.
They said a gunman walked into the business with a handgun and shot five employees just before 10 am local time.
The two injured were taken to Baltimore's Shock Trauma Center, part of the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Other businesses in the Emmorton complex and five schools in the Edgewood area have been placed on lockdown — meaning students are being kept in the buildings, and visitors are not permitted — at the advice of the sheriff's office, the county school system has said.
Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) are also on the scene to assist local police.
Mr Gahler has also said police do not believe any other individuals were involved in the shooting and that it appears "to be a target attack, limited to that business."
According to the local newspaper, a residence in Cecil County, Maryland has been searched in relation to the incident.
Cast and crew from the Netflix programme House of Cards were filming nearby and are also on lockdown. Actress Robin Wright is on set, but actor Kevin Spacey was reportedly not on set today.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said in a statement that "state helicopters are in the air and state troopers are on the ground from multiple barracks" to assist in bringing in the suspect in this "tragic shooting."
Mr Prince is also under suspicion for a shooting in Wilmington, Delaware that occurred nearly two hours after the Edgewood shooting which occurred at the 28th Street Auto Sales & Service. Local radio station WBAL reported that Mr Prince has family in the Wilmington area as well.
Mr Prince was convicted in 2003 on multiple burglary charges. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, but served only two. According to court records, he was ordered to pay $34,500 in restitution as well, the Baltimore Sun reported.
He was also charged in 2015 in Cecil County, Maryland with felony possession of a firearm and carrying a firearm in his vehicle, however prosecutors in that case dropped the charges. It is unclear immediately as to why the charges were dropped.
The alleged gunman was also named in a restraining order in February 2017, but it was ultimately denied. No details about that case have been released as yet.
