Maryland mother detained after 'leaving new born baby on side of road'

A mother from Maryland has been detained by police after she allegedly left a six-week old bay on the side of the road.

Anne Arundel County police charged 26-year-old Sandra Clara McClary of Baltimore with child neglect and reckless endangerment on Sunday and said she was being held on $500,000 bail.

Lt TJ Smith said that Ms McClary told the Associated Press that the baby had been left there on Saturday and that the incident might be related to a domestic dispute.

Police say a resident of Pasadena, Maryland, found the infant in a scuffed carrier before midnight Saturday and called police. The baby is in good condition and in Department of Child Protective Services' custody.

The baby was apparently found by a local church leader. Bishop Raymond Showell and his wife told WUSA9, at first he thought it was a box.

"I was just thinking that this is what the world has coming to, they're not as really concerned as we should be," he said.

Alice Burton, who made the 911 call on Saturday night, said the baby was in great danger.

"If a car had came up the road, it sure would've ran over it," she said.

"I think something should happen, you know, you just can't leave your child like that."

Police say Ms McClary called police Sunday morning claiming to be the baby’s mother. Ms McClary is scheduled to go to trial this week in a string of robberies.
