From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A powerlifter has rescued a man trapped underneath a two-tonne SUV.
Ryan Belcher, from Michigan, heard a loud crash outside his home and looked to find a Jeep Cherokee had flipped upside down.
Without hesitation, Mr Belcher ran outside to the car wreckage and found a man pinned underneath the vehicle screaming for help.
"When I first approached the vehicle, there was a good four men there, and they were all trying to move this vehicle and I seen it wasn’t happening and I figured what a better time now to use what I know I can actually do," Mr Belcher said on Monday, while appearing on Fox & Friends.
The 29-year-old powerlifter, who weighs 350 pounds and can squat about 950 pounds and dead lift 800 pounds, suspected that he would be able to hoist just enough to list the vehicle off the man stuck underneath.
The man’s lower body was still inside the car while his upper body was crashed against a speed limit sign.
“I just jumped right in," Mr Belcher added. "I seen a window that was broken out of the back of the vehicle and I knew if I can swing the vehicle in a certain direction I can free him from that pole. So, I just stuck my arms in and I don’t know I just grabbed it, lifted it up and started pushing and all I heard was that’s enough we can get him.”
The man Mr Belcher rescued and another woman suffered serious injuries from the car crash. No fatalities have been reported.
The powerlifter said he met with the rescued man and his family on Sunday, where they thanked him for his heroic actions.
