From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A motorist who was stranded in deep snow for five days told his rescuers he survived by eating packets of taco sauce.
Jeremy Taylor, 36, and his dog Ally got stuck after he drove his Toyota 4Runner down a forest road in Sunriver, Oregon, on 24 February.
When he failed to return from his trip, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office launched an appeal for help on Facebook.
He was eventually found by a snowmobiler on 1 March and a search and rescue team hauled his car out of the woods using a large snow tractor.
"Jeremy and Ally were found to be in good condition, but hungry after being stuck in the snow for five days," said sheriff's office spokesman Sergeant William Bailey.
"He told investigators he had gone up the service road on Sunday, but became stuck in the snow.
"He awoke Monday to even more snow and was unable to get his vehicle unstuck. Jeremy had attempted to walk out on Monday, but the deep snow made it very difficult and he and Ally returned to his vehicle.
"Jeremy stayed warm over the next four days by periodically starting his vehicle and used a few taco sauce packets he had as food."
After returning home, Mr Taylor joked on Facebook: "Taco Bell fire sauce saves lives!!"
He added: "Thank you everyone, I'm safe my Ally dog is safe. I really appreciate all the help. Got lucky, lets never do that again. I'll be in touch with everyone soon."
