Jacinto Suarez, 65, was pulled from the tracks and onto the platform at Jay Street-MetroTech station in Brooklyn.
But although police said he did not come into contact with the electrified third rail and was not hit by a train, he later died at a nearby hospital.
His alleged attacker, named as 18-year-old Edward Cordero, did not leave the scene following the attack and was interviewed by police.
Witnesses told The New York Times he was ranting and talking to himself before approaching Mr Suarez, who extended his arm to keep the teenager away.
The teenager then struck Mr Suarez, causing him to fall onto the tracks.
Police said they were waiting for the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death and charges are pending.
