The United States Park police responded to a shooting incident at the Lincoln Memorial on Monday and airlifted one injured person, local media reported.

The incident occurred late evening, after 7pm PT, when a helicopter arrived at the site of the monument to airlift the injured individual who suffered a gunshot injury.

The injured was rushed to the Westington Hospital Centre but the condition of the person is still not yet known.

According to News4, quoting two sources, the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. The person’s identity was not revealed either.

The sudden arrival of a helicopter shocked the visitors at the memorial and many of them captured photos and videos of the incident.

One video circulating on social media shows a helicopter landing near the reflective pool near the memorial as stunned bystanders stand and watch.

“I’ve been here for about an hour. Didn’t hear any shots. Saw the MEDEVAC and a big police response though,” wrote one user on Twitter.

Authorities later confirmed one person was airlifted from the scene and taken to the hospital. “The area remains closed pending an on-scene investigation,” US Park police spokesperson Roselyn Normen told US media outlets.
