From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The brother of Fox News host Laura Ingraham has called out his television personality sister for her “monstrous” behaviour after she mocked teen climate activist Greta Thunberg during her latest show.

Curtis Ingraham, who has previously shared disdain over his younger sister’s TV antics, wrote in a tweet on Monday night: “I can no longer apologise for a sibling who I no longer recognise” after the latest airing of The Ingraham Angle.

Ms Ingraham spent a segment of her programme making fun of the 16-year-old activist, who delivered an emotional speech earlier in the day at the United Nations Climate Summit. She compared the young girl to the horror film Children of the Corn, a 1984 movie that tells the story of a group of children living in rural Nebraska who form an evil cult and kill the adults in the town after being manipulated by a supernatural force.

"I can't wait for Stephen King's sequel, 'Children of the Climate,'" Ms Ingraham said. "Now, the left – if they ever get in power – will simply use the excuse of climate change to reward their friends."

In response, Mr Ingraham tweeted: “Clearly my sister’s paycheck is more important than the world her three adopted kids will inherit.”

“I can and will continue to call out the monstrous behaviour and the bully commentary born out of anger,” he added. Mr Ingraham’s tweet quoted a post from Media Matters for America about the controversial statements his sister made on her programme.

Ms Ingraham’s comments came just a few hours after a guest on another Fox News show, Michael Knowles, described Ms Thunberg as a “mentally ill Swedish child”.

The Fox News guest said if Ms Thunberg’s historic climate strikes “were about science, it would be led by scientists rather than by politicians and a mentally-ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and by the international left.”

A spokesperson for the network has since said Mr Knowles would no longer appear as a guest, adding in a statement: “We apologise to Greta Thunberg and to our viewers."

Ms Ingraham has previously stoked controversy over incendiary remarks, causing a boycott of her show’s advertisers after she derided another teenager, school shooting survivor David Hogg, for not getting into his top choice of universities.

The network has not commented on her latest statements.

In an interview with the Daily Beast last year, Mr Ingraham said his sister was the ultimate “hypocrite,” adding: “I think she’s a monster.”
