Yesterday, a federal judge ordered Alabama officials to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, to adhere to a previous ruling striking down the state’s ban on the ceremonies.
The ruling followed an order by Moore, which has led to many state judge refraining from issuing licenses to same-sex couples.
Only a third of the state's 67 counties have issued the licenses despite the federal ruling.
The subsequent mess has seen gay and lesbian couples marry in places such as Birmingham, while others in dozens of other counties have been turned away.
On Monday, the US Supreme Court refused to grant a request from Alabama's Republican attorney general, Luther Strange, to keep the weddings on hold until it decides later this year whether laws banning same-sex matrimony violate the US Constitution.
The latest twist in the controversy over gay marriage in the southern state comes in an offer of support to Moore from the Mississippi chapter of the Ku Klux Klan which is calling for members to protest against the legalisation of gay marriage.
Brent Waller, the United Dixie White Knights' imperial wizard, wrote on the Stormfront white supremacy forum: “The Mississippi Klan salutes Alabama's chief justice Roy Moore, for refusing to bow to the yoke of Federal tyranny.”
”The Feds have no authority over individual States marriage laws,” he said.
Using a homophobic slur, Waller went on: “The fudgepackers from Hollywood and all major news networks are in shock that the good people from the heart of Dixie are resisting their Imperialist, Communist Homosexual agenda!”
“The Federal Government by way of its foreign masters seems set to push this abomination, on the God fearing people of Alabama,” he adds.
Alabama is the 37th US state to legalise gay marriage, but the first in the socially conservative Deep South.
