From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. The High School prom is a constant fixture – both within the annals of US popular culture and on the list of events that create vast anxiety for teenagers.

The reason? There are two, pressing issues to address – what to wear and who to go with.

So it was a pleasant change, to say the least, when one straight Nevada High School student removed any such anxiety for his gay friend by asking him to their Las Vegas school prom.

The NewNowNext website reported that Jacob Lescenski asked his best friend Anthony Martinez by unfurling a giant banner that read: “You’re hella gay, I’m hella str8, but you’re like my brother so be my d8!”

Anthony is on the student council and is often responsible for planning school dances, the website reported. However, he said that he never gets asked to go.

“He’s a real man,” Anthony said of Jacob. “Given that he has the guts to fulfill my gay student council dream of always helping out planning dances, and never getting asked. I couldn’t ask for a better person in my life.”

Jacob said: “I decided on going to prom alone because my original date idea didn’t work out so well. Then one night I saw Anthony, who is my best friend, Tweeting about wanting a date. I then thought about how amazing of a guy he is and that he deserved a date. So, I came up with the poster idea.”
