A woman and toddler were pulled from the wreckage of a plane after it crashed in Illinois.

Eyewitnesses said a man was also trapped in the aircraft which went down in the city of Waterloo in the southwestern portion of the state.

Footage from the crash site shows a small white plane turned upside, with debris strewn about in the grass and shrubbery nearby.

A police officer broke a window and then remove the little boy from the wreckage, a local Fox News affiliate reported.

The officer was working at his home near the crash site and managed to get to the scene quickly, the channel reported.

Arch Helicopter, an air medical evacuation service, attended the scene.

The condition of those aboard was unknown.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department confirmed that they were responding to the crash, but no further information was available at the time of reporting.
