Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

CCTV footage shows debris floating in waves around a residential building in Florida on the day Hurricane Michael made landfall, and the same house and yard covered in mud on Thursday.

Experts at the National Hurricane Centre have said the hurricane's devastating storm surge reached as high as 14 feet (4.27 meters) in some areas of Florida's Gulf coast.

The centre's storm surge unit said on Thursday that peak storm surge ranged from 2.7 meters to 4.27 meters from Mexico Beach east through to Apalachee Bay.

Security camera footage from St George Island, which directly faces the Mexican Gulf and surrounds the Apalachee Bay, showed extreme water levels surrounding a house after the powerful hurricane made landfall on Wednesday.

Video of the same building a day after Michael swept the area showed the garden completely covered in mud.

St George Island was among places along Florida's coast where residents were reported to have ignored evacuation orders.
